Very few chapters in Portuguese music have become as legendary as Nuno Canavarro and his “Plux Quba.” Originally released in Portugal in 1988, it crossed borders a decade later with a reissue on Jim O’Rourke’s Moikai label, and since then hasn’t lost a fraction of its magnetism. The absence of a second solo album, despite a career dedicated to soundtracks, has made Canavarro’s name a collective enigma that remains unresolved. “/Radiant Rift” is not yet that second solo album, but it does ease the wait. Through a pivotal collaboration with musician and composer Bruno Miguel Pinto, we’ll hear for the first time how the musical language that gave us “Plux Quba” has evolved over time and branched out in new directions, offering us music that lingers in the waking hours, somewhere between sound poetry and the dark underside of ambient music; simultaneously orchestral and muted, electronic and acoustic, subtle and imposing. This is definitely one of the most anticipated moments of Semibreve.
