Following his first two solo albums, in which the piano was the driving force, “Flesh and Bones” dwells in the abstraction of a dark, suspicious, and carnal ambient sound. This is not entirely unfamiliar if we listen to certain sounds from Roll the Dice, Malcolm Pardon’s seminal collaboration with Peder Mannerfelt. However, while in that duo the modular synth music seemed to hurl us away from the gravitational field, this new creation draws us into the bowels of the earth, into a dense liturgy steeped in suffocating harshness, as if something were slowly undergoing a ritual of decomposition right before our eyes. Directly inspired by an exhibition and performance by Gustaf Broms, a deeply subterranean and textured sonic cosmology makes its debut as a duo on the Semibreve stage, bringing “Flesh and Bones” out of the abyss to confront the substance of its own flesh.
