For decades, Jocy de Oliveira has been the narrator of her own story. “Universo Circular” is the first portrait created by others, but the Brazilian composer still remains its sole voice. There are no interviews or opinions from others, only the thread of her own reflections on time, memory, creativity and the people who have shaped her life and work. Dácio Pinheiro’s film distils an immense career, built on discoveries, assertions and lucid acts of defiance, showing us, unfiltered, how Jocy de Oliveira is one of the most prolific figures in 20th-century sound art in Brazil and, we’d even say, beyond.
