Azu Tiwaline forged her artistic identity with the Sahara Desert right outside her window. In Djerid, in southern Tunisia, her contact with Berber culture and Sufi mysticism provided the raw material and inspiration for her music, and when the world heard her debut album ‘Draw Me a Silence’, released on the British label Livity Sound in 2020, her sound was naturally described as “Saharan techno” or “desert dub.” It was like one of the storms that regularly sweep across Europe from Africa, and since then her music has been a breath of hot air brimming with vibrant modular synth work and abstract textures, driven by dizzying rhythms and smuggled-in dub. Meanwhile, a new album is on the horizon, and we can already catch glimpses of what’s to come: a promise of collective ecstasy and connection through the art of hypnotic polyrhythm.
