a,drift
composition for multiple 1/4″ reel to reel tape machines and oscillators
it’s a longform evolving piece focusing on slowly drifting sine/square waves processed via my tape machines
each wave is specifically tuned to my own system, i prefer slightly sharper notes, so each of them is at the moment 20cents sharper (but maybe this will shift)
the scale is A … a,drift , the title sort of recalls to that concept
I take each performance as a pilgrimage of sorts to be honest, as I want to perform with my own tapes and so that means travelling with the machines.
none of the performances will be the same. Each of them is unique because of the way the tapes are set up and the way I interact with them.
i am really looking forward to explore how it will resonate in the space
After working as a sound engineer at concerts in Italy, Marta Salogni moved to London, where she quickly acquired knowledge and experience in recording studios, building an impressive portfolio of artists she has collaborated with. In a more intimate setting and, most importantly, at a different pace, she has also created unique music that exemplifies her sharp and sophisticated ear. In response to a commission from Semibreve and from the festivals Unsound and Berlin Atonal, Marta Salogni conceived “a,drift,” a new composition for live performance, featuring tape machines and oscillators. On stage, four mechanical devices, like musicians facing their conductor, will serve as the core elements of an analogue organism anchored in the key of A, evoking a sense of drift and detachment. These are feelings dear to Marta Salogni, as each concert seems like a pilgrimage, the result of a long journey in the company of her machines, and with the awareness that each space imposes its own acoustics and each gesture dictates a new idea and outcome. “a,drift” establishes itself in this way as an ephemeral event, as unique as the magnetism we are about to experience.
