On this new album by Noémi Büchi, it’s all body. A vehicle for self-affirmation and change; a transformation, a before and an after. In “Exuvie”, a title that refers to the Latin term for the skin that is shed during metamorphosis, we see a Noémi Büchi who is reborn through her detachment from the past, and what she has cast off in order to evolve. Amid this rapid growth, we witness the controlled chaos of all these transformations, in which body and mind evolve at different paces, with clashing results. At the same time, Brigitte Fässler’s images, which bring to mind Francis Bacon, reveal distorted bodies, as if their materialization were suspended, or still taking shape. The music accordingly takes on a sculptural quality, chiselled from raw material yet polished by emotional drama and rhythmic joy “dense as marble, ethereal as air”, as it was put in Pitchfork.
