Let’s not sugar-coat it: watching “Lunng” live is like facing an oncoming car crash as it inevitably heads your way. Part metaphor, part reality, “Lunng” on stage is an overwhelming force that perfectly captures the clashes found within the music of Sam Slater’s third solo album. At its core lies an intense, intoxicating, and highly emotional combustion engine, fuelling on and expelling drone metal, electricity, folk opera, and classical arrangements. This delirium of tension between ultra-high-definition soundscapes and industrial edge clearly defines the career of this British artist who lives in Berlin and from there composes and produces highly acclaimed music for film and television, as well as for video games and documentaries. However, “Lunng” was not created alone, either in the studio or on stage, and for Semibreve, Sam Slater will be joined by Cavid Dhen on wind instruments, Ricardo Jacinto on cello, and Ece Canli on vocals, all alongside the dreamlike, cinematic set design by Theresa Baumgartner. Together, these five are on a merciless vehicle that will crash into us with full force.
