Music has not been considered an unchanging tradition for a long while; no genre or instrument is left untouched by reinterpretations, subversions or even visceral revolutions. The accordion is an instrument steeped in memory, yet it seems only in the last century to have expanded from its roots in folklore and popular music. While figures like Ellegaard, Lips and Herrmann pioneered this development, more recent composers such as Pohjonen and Batkovic have emerged as ambassadors for the astonishing versatility of this instrument made up of buttons, keys, air and muscle. ‘Cassotto’ brings these possibilities to life, creating an infinite world spanning from a fractal whisper to the full power of an orchestral typhoon. Listening to the entire journey of “Cassotto”, an ecosystem of electronica, noises, viral modulations, voices and vibrating bodies, it’s hard to believe that this is Suzan Peeters’ debut, which only adds to the wonder of this music. Live, you can expect all these elements, combined and enhanced with boundless skill and imagination.
